Above, you can see that we kept the idea of blood and it worked well. We had the intension of using it within the books, but we weren't to sure whether it would work or be effective, yet it went better than planned. The blood automatically gives that eerie, uncomfortable atmosphere of death and danger so we definitely wanted to use the blood in the opening.
The rope we always wanted to use. We hoped for brown rope as it's common in horror films, but we could only get our hands on blue plastic rope. Although this was not the prop we wanted, we edited it to make it look slightly darker and more brown to fit in with the atmosphere.
The fire and wood we also had to keep in. The wood just to keep the burning going and we burned the pages to fit the narrative. We wanted different shots of separate pages being burned and big chunks of a book being burned with wood. The fire sets a nice contrast with the coldness of the scenes, and also makes the audience question what's going on which is what we want, as it makes them want to continue watching the film.
