Audience Questionnaire Analysed

We devised a questionnaire for random members of the public to ask their opinion upon Horror/Thriller films.

The first question we asked was 'what is your age?'. This was a standard question to see the most popular age groups asked this would allow us to be sure which age groups opinions were being represented within our questionnaire answers. The most popular age ranges were between 19-26 and between 41-50 as both of these scored the highest join marks of 3 each. This allowed us to have a broader opinion of the horror/thriller genre from different generations of people.

The second questions we asked was 'What is your gender?'. This was also as standard question to allow us a basic knowledge of the type of people that were responding to our questions. The most common gender was Female as their were 6 marks against this gender. This allows us to know generally what the female audience like and dislike about the horror/thriller genre.

The Third question we asked was 'What is your favourite genre of film?'  This was also a standard question to allow us to understand how many of the people answering the questionnaire had their favourite genre as Horror or Thriller. The two most popular film genres between the people we asked were Action and Horror, both scoring 3 marks each. This allows us to see how many people would choose horror as their first choice of film.

The fourth question we asked was 'What would you expect to see in a film opening?'. This question was to understand what the audience know about film opening sequences and what are the most important things to them which should be represented. the most popular answers were: Main Cast Titles (scoring 8 marks) Music (scoring 8 marks) and Title (scoring 10 marks). This shows us that the titles for main cast and the film title are the most important to an audience as it tells them a little about what the film is about and also which actors are starring in it, which is a large attraction to some audience members. Also this shows us that the movie score is also a very important part to a film opening as it sets the scene and allows the audience to discover the genre.

The fifth question we asked was 'What would you expect to see in a horror/thriller film?'. This question allows us to see what are the most vital aspects (mainly in mise-en-scene) of a Horror/Thriller film. the most popular answers were: Blood and Ghosts (both scoring 8 marks) and Haunted House (scoring 9 marks). This allows us to see what this particular age group and genre like in horror films. it is clear to see from this that films involving Ghosts stories and gore are a big attraction.

The sixth question we asked was 'What three horror films have you recently seen?'. This allows us to see whether old classic horror films are still enjoyed by an audience or whether it is new films that capture an audiences attention. The answers that were given to this questions were: 'Women in Black, Women In Black 2, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, The Green Mile, Sinister, The Visit and Dawn of The Dead'. This shows tat audiences still enjoy old classic horror films like Psycho and Silence of The Lambs'. This shows that we can take influence from these horror films as to what works well adn what does not.

The seventh question we asked was 'What is your favourite horror/thriller film?' This question allows us to see what types of films are the most popular to all different types of audiences. the answers were: 'Women in Black, Sinister, Silence of The Lambs and The Visit'. this shows us that these are the most popular films for the audience's that answered our questionnaire. This gives us a background as to what types of films are popular and what types of things need to be included to grab an audiences attention.
